Here's how I usually start of my game:
1st city create warrior. (You can walk around with it a little, but
make sure it's back in the city by the time your population hits 3.)
When ready, create settler (if your city growth is in line with the
time it will take to make a settler).
If I see that my city will not reach size 3 by the time my settler is
ready, I make barracks instead, then settler.
When settler is ready, make a 2nd warrior (or spearman if you have
bronze working in the meantime).
Go create City2 with your settler and then send your 2nd unit to that
city as soon as ready.
